Subject: Why Vote
3rd -- Love or Fear
Issue: General
Date: September 22, 2004
Author: Ken Larsen
Ken Larsen, Personal Choice Party candidate for Governor of Utah,
released the following comments on the election:
"This is the most amazing election I have seen. Neither candidate is
giving anyone anything to vote for. It's all about fear. America is
in a state of extreme fear. The terrorists have won. We can't have
the land of the free if we don't have the home of the brave. We
can't have the home of the brave if we're basing our presidential
decision on fear. Half of America is afraid Kerry will mess up the
war and bring terrorist attacks to America. They want safety over
freedom. The other half is afraid Bush will destroy our economy and
the environment. They want comfort over freedom. Unfortunately, no
matter who wins, we will have neither safety, comfort nor freedom.
"I am not afraid. I refuse to vote out of fear. I will vote for the
principles I love. When I think of how I love my principles, I am
feeling love, not hate. I am feeling trust, not fear. I am feeling
peace, not violence. I may be a minority of one, but I will not
surrender to fear. I am not afraid enough of Bush to vote for Kerry.
I am not afraid enough of Kerry to vote for Bush. If I vote for
Kerry or Bush, I may vote for a winner, but I will lose. If I vote
for a man who truly understands and represents my principles, I may
vote for a loser, but I will win.
"I see two banners representing mutually exclusive states of mind.
On one, I see a skull. I see hate, fear, revenge, violence and
distrust. I see an elephant and a donkey. On the other banner, I see
a smiley face. I see love, bravery, forgiveness, peace and trust. I
also see the Statue of Liberty, a sunflower and an eagle with a
flag. I see people voting for what they want instead of voting
against what they don't want. I see a faint flicker of true American
politics, without concern for the outcome to be decided by the
terrified. What did Patrick Henry say, something like, "I would
rather lose voting for right than win voting for wrong"? Or was it,
"Give me liberty or give me death"? Same thing. I refuse to
surrender to fear. The terrorists/politicians can kill me, but they
cannot make me fear them. That is my choice. And I choose love. And
when enough of us choose love, it will happen. I think it will
happen long before we become a majority. That's my faith in the
power of love, however you may wish to personify it."
