Issue:
Amendment 3
- (proposal on Utah's 2004 ballot)
Date: September 27, 2004
Author: Ken Larsen
NO ON 3!
Dr. Ken Larsen, Personal Choice candidate for Governor, spoke with
satire and passion today as he expressed his opposition to proposed
Amendment 3:
Let's amend the Utah Constitution to define the term "Religion" in a way
that excludes non-Christians. That way, we can exclude the non-Christians
from First Amendment protection and all those tax breaks. Now, all we need
is a good legal definition of the term "non-Christian." Anyone wanna start
that debate? I thought not. Maybe the Mormons would prefer not to know what
it's like to be on the receiving end of a constitutional amendment defining
them out of the meaning of a religious institution, like marriage. Look out,
non-Christians (Mormons and others). You all know the mantra, "America is a
Christian Nation." Soon it will be in the schools. The official, majority,
definition of "Christian" may well exclude you. Are you really sure you want
to be subject to majority vote concerning religious definitions? Aren't you
glad this type of amendment to our State Constitution, as with Amendment 3,
is already prohibited by the 14th Amendment of the Supreme Law of the Land?
Yes, it is sad to see the polls indicating that so many Utahns have such
contempt for our National Constitution. In this case, I am confident the
Constitution is on my side, regardless of the opinions of the Judiciary.
Read it yourself. The 14th Amendment says NO to Amendment 3!"
