I think solar power has a very high
potential, once a standard generator is developed and produced. I'm talking
about computer-controlled mirrors that focus sunlight on external combustion
engines and generators. Yes, I said External combustion. I remember seeing
such a machine at a museum in Chicago. It used natural gas, but was less
efficient than an internal combustion engine. I think computers and mirrors
on the Utah deserts alone could produce as much electricity as all the
current electrical generation in America, including coal, nuclear,
hydroelectric and wind, and at a fraction of the cost, maybe less than 10%.
And, if they are reasonably small and mobile, we might also save half the
distribution expenses, which are now about 3/4 or more of your electric
bill. Put a unit in every subdivision and avoid the high voltage power
lines. Of course, you would want to divert some of the power into hydrolysis
to produce hydrogen to burn under the external combustion engine when the
sun isn't shining. I think our energy future is very bright, if we could
just get government out of the way.
