Ken Larsen Responds to
Charles Jay's Press Release on Amendment 3
Issue:
Amendment 3 - (proposal on
Utah's 2004 ballot)
Date: October 26, 2004
Author: Ken Larsen
Ken responds:
A very wise man once said something like, "Render unto God the things
that appertain to God and render unto the government those things that
appertain to government." For example, it is a terrible mistake to give the
sword of government to the clergy. The result has been the Spanish
Inquisition, the Nazi Holocaust, the Crusades and the current mess in the
Middle East. On the other hand, it is an equally terrible mistake to put the
beliefs of the church in the hands of the government. We complain that
fundamentalist Islamists want to rule Iraq and impose their customs. Yet, we
are there to force them to be just like us. Is that not hypocrisy? Is it not
oxymoronic to force a people to be free? We say they must not be allowed to
force their religion on their minorities. Then, we force our religious
definition of marriage on our minorities. The definition of marriage is one
of those things of God that must not be rendered unto the government.
Marriage partners should be free to file their legally binding contracts
with the government for possible enforcement. Government should not be free
to define the conditions of that contract.
As much as Jesus preached against adultery, he refused to legislate
his beliefs. So should we. No on 3!
